Why do white clothes become dull in after repeated washing?

There are many reasons for white clothes to become dull. A common factor is hard water. Trace elements in the water can prevent soap from lathering properly and the residue can leave a dull or grey appearance. For slightly hard water, it is possible to overcome the problem of siding, by simply adding more detergent.

The other reason could be the dust particles collected over time in between the fabric fibres.
