What is the reason that the lining of the small Intestine is so extensively folded?

 This is to increase the surface area of the intestine for absorption of the nutrients in the food. The lining of the small intestinal mucosa is very highly specialized for maximizing the digestion and absorption of nutrients. The lining is highly folded to form microscopic finger-like projections called villi which increase the surface area of the intestine to help with the absorption of nutrients
