Why is pure iron not suitable as an engineering material?

 Pure iron is not suitable as an engineering material because it lacks sufficient strength and also rusts quickly. The strength of iron can be increased by adding carbon and other metals, creating steel, which is, for these reasons, preferred over pure iron as an engineering material.
