Mercury is also called quicksilver because of its silver like lustre. It has the symbol Hg (from the Greek hydrargyrum, for watery (or liquid) silver) and atomic number 80. A heavy, silvery, transition metal, mercury is one of only two elements (and the only metal) that are liquids at room temperature (the other is bromine). Used in thermometers, barometers and other scientific apparatuses, it is mostly obtained by reduction from the mineral cinnabar (HgS)
