Our bodies are covered with hair, each of which has a gland at the bottom which pumps out an oily substance called sebum (and the gland is called the sebaceous gland). This oil is a waterproof layer that stops water getting into our skin and keeps our skin supple. Only the palms of our hands and feet are hairless so don't have this protective layer of oil. This means water can get into the skin of our hands and feet, making them swell up.
